Secret Kingdom in Upper Mustang

UPPER MUSTANG TREK

Upper Mustang Trek – Journey to Nepal’s Last Forbidden Kingdom

Overview

The Upper Mustang Trek is one of Nepal’s most unique trekking adventures. It takes you to the famous Last Forbidden Kingdom in the remote Himalayan region of Mustang. This trek offers beautiful mountain views, ancient Tibetan culture, old monasteries, and dramatic desert landscapes.

The Upper Mustang region remained closed to foreign visitors until 1992. Even today, it is a restricted area that has preserved its culture, traditions, and natural beauty.

Your Journey Begins

This 17-day Upper Mustang Trek starts in Kathmandu. You will visit several UNESCO World Heritage Sites before travelling to Pokhara.

The following day, you will take a scenic flight to Jomsom, the gateway to Upper Mustang. From Jomsom, your trekking adventure begins. The trail passes through peaceful villages, deep valleys, colorful cliffs, and beautiful monasteries.

Discover the Last Forbidden Kingdom

Upper Mustang is very different from other trekking regions in Nepal. Instead of green forests, you will walk through dry hills, rocky landscapes, deep canyons, and colorful cliffs.

Along the way, you will visit traditional villages including Kagbeni, Chele, Syangboche, Ghami, Tsarang, and Lo Manthang. These villages still follow ancient Tibetan traditions. You will see prayer wheels, chortens, monasteries, and old stone houses throughout the journey.

Explore Lo Manthang

The highlight of the trek is Lo Manthang, the ancient walled city of Mustang. Visitors can explore royal palaces, historic monasteries, narrow streets, and traditional homes. The local people continue to preserve their unique culture and lifestyle.

Beautiful Himalayan Views

The Upper Mustang Trek offers amazing views of some of Nepal’s highest mountains. During the trek, you can enjoy panoramic views of:

  • Dhaulagiri (8,167 m)
  • Annapurna I (8,091 m)
  • Nilgiri (7,061 m)
  • Annapurna South
  • Tukuche Peak

Every day brings new landscapes, beautiful scenery, and excellent opportunities for photography.
