Important Immigration & Trekking Guidelines for Nepal

Countries Not Eligible for Visa on Arrival

Citizens of the following countries cannot receive a visa on arrival at Nepal’s immigration entry points:
Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Cameroon, Somalia, Liberia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Palestine, and Afghanistan.
These travelers must obtain a visa in advance from a Nepalese Embassy or Consulate.

Visa Validity & Extension

Please check the validity date of your Nepal visa and your passport number to avoid problems.
If you want to extend your stay, apply for a visa extension before your current visa expires.

Always ensure that entry and exit stamps are placed correctly on your passport. Staying in Nepal without a valid visa is considered an offence.

Trekking Permits & Travel Routes

Follow only the routes listed on your trekking permit. Any deviation is treated as a legal violation.
Keep your passport and trekking permits with you at all times during trekking.

Do not film in restricted areas without permission.

Avoid Fraud & Illegal Activities

Be cautious of brokers, fake documents, or anyone offering unofficial visa or permit services.
Changing the purpose of your stay or engaging in employment/volunteer work while on a tourist visa is strictly prohibited.

Registration & Safety During Trekking

Register your trekking route at:

  • Police check posts
  • Immigration checkpoints
  • Your Embassy or Consulate

If you face any issues, immediately contact the nearest police or immigration office.

Money Exchange & Address Changes

Exchange currency only with authorized dealers and always take a receipt.
If you change your residence address in Nepal, inform Immigration or the local police within seven days.

If your embassy issues a new passport during your stay, contact the Immigration Department for visa transfer.

Environmental & Cultural Responsibility

“Let the Himalayas change you—do not change them.”

  • During your stay, please:
  • Respect local customs, culture, and holy sites.
  • Avoid giving money to children.
  • Ask for permission before taking photos.
  • Keep campsites cleaner than you found them.
  • Avoid open fires.
  • Burn dry waste safely.
  • Protect water sources and avoid pollution.
  • Allow plants and wildlife to remain untouched.
  • Encourage guides and porters to follow conservation rules.
