Nepal Visa Information
Nepal is open to visitors from around the world, and most foreign nationals can obtain a
Tourist Visa on Arrival at designated immigration entry points or apply
for a visa/eVisa through a Nepalese diplomatic mission or the Department of Immigration.
Travelers should have a valid passport with at least six months of validity and a recent
passport-size photograph.

How to Get a Visa on Arrival
You can make the process easier by completing the online tourist visa application before
arriving in Nepal.
- Complete the online visa application or use the kiosk at the airport.
- Pay the applicable visa fee.
- Take your passport, application/payment receipt and required documents to the
immigration counter.
Nepal has also introduced online visa-fee payment through its official immigration system.
Where Can You Get a Visa on Arrival?
Tourist visas are available at designated international airports and land-border
immigration offices, including:
- Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Kathmandu
- Gautam Buddha International Airport (GBIA), Bhairahawa
- Kakarbhitta, Jhapa
- Birgunj, Parsa
- Bhairahawa, Rupandehi
- Nepalgunj, Banke
- Gaddachowki, Kanchanpur
- Kodari, Sindhupalchok
Nepal Tourism Board lists the major visa-on-arrival entry points and advises travelers
to check current immigration information before traveling.
Countries Not Eligible for Visa on Arrival
Citizens of the following countries must obtain a visa in advance through a Nepalese
diplomatic mission or the applicable online visa process:
- Nigeria
- Ghana
- Zimbabwe
- Eswatini (Swaziland)
- Cameroon
- Somalia
- Liberia
- Ethiopia
- Syria
- Iraq
- Palestine
- Afghanistan
Visa-Free / Gratis Visa
Some travelers are eligible for a gratis (free) visa under Nepal’s immigration rules.
SAARC Nationals
Citizens of SAARC countries, except Afghanistan, can receive a free tourist visa for
up to 30 days once in a calendar year.
Indian Citizens
Indian citizens do not require a visa to enter Nepal, although they must carry an
acceptable identity document.
Chinese Citizens
Chinese nationals are eligible for a gratis tourist visa under current provisions,
with eligibility extending up to 150 days per visa year.
Children under 10 years may also qualify for a gratis visa, subject to applicable
conditions.
Visa Extension
Tourist visas can be extended in Nepal through the Department of Immigration in
Kathmandu or the Immigration Office in Pokhara.
The current extension fee is:
- USD 45 for the first 15 days
- USD 3 per additional day
- USD 25 additional fee for multiple re-entry
- USD 5 per day for late/overstay
The maximum permitted tourist stay is 150 days in a calendar year
(January–December).
Passport Requirements
Foreign travelers visiting Nepal should have:
- A valid passport
- At least six months passport validity
- A recent passport-size photograph
- Valid travel documentation
- Appropriate visa or visa eligibility
Visa applications should contain information that matches the traveler’s passport exactly.
Trekking Permits in Nepal
Not all trekking routes require the same type of permit.
Foreign trekkers visiting Nepal’s designated restricted areas must obtain a trekking
permit through a registered trekking agency. The permit requirements and fees vary
depending on the region and season.

Permit fees and restricted areas can change, so trekkers should confirm the latest
requirements before departure.
Important:
Trekking permits are different from national park, conservation-area and other entry
permits, which may also be required depending on the trekking route.
Immigration Office Hours
The Department of Immigration currently lists:
- Summer: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM
- Winter: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–4:00 PM
Tourist visa services may also be available on public holidays during specified hours.
